The course of study for a a radiologic technologist is a two-year program that leads to an Associate of Applied Science degree. The program is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills to perform radiographic examinations, provide patient care, and assist radiologists during diagnostic procedures.
The curriculum balances general education and radiologic technology courses with supervised practicums at local clinical facilities. These combined experiences provide students with opportunities to develop educational skills and occupational competence throughout the 24-month program.
Program Admission Criteria
Available clinical space limits enrollment; therefore, students are admitted on a selective basis. To be considered for admission to the program, a prospective student must:
- Be a high school graduate or equivalent.
- Meet the basic entry requirements of Temple College.
- Meet the requirements for the college’s TSI Plan, which usually includes passing scores on the TSIA2 exam unless an exemption has been earned.
- Pass all prerequisite courses
- Achieve a satisfactory score on the department-specified pre-admission test.
- Meet requirements to pass a criminal history background check (individuals with any infractions that would prohibit clinical site placement will not be admitted into the program. Specific infractions are listed in the application packet).
- Be able to pass a drug screening test (Specific infractions are listed in the application packet).
- Provide evidence of a current BLS Provider CPR card from the American Heart Association.
- Provide evidence of required immunizations listed in the application packet.
- Earn a grade of “C” or better in all coursework applied toward the degree.
- Be approved by the program selection committee.
Acceptance into the program is determined by a point system based on:
- Overall college GPA (2.5 or higher recommended)
- Admission exam score
- Academic record (prerequisite course grades)
Note: Admission Criteria and point system criteria are subject to change. Final criteria will be published in the application packet.
Conditional Acceptance
Students accepted into the program must submit the following within 2 weeks of notification of conditional acceptance:
- Submit a completed medical examination form verifying good physical and mental health. Documentation should include the physician’s notation that the applicant can meet the program’s physical requirements. Refer to the application packet for current technical standards.
- Provide documentation of a satisfactory criminal background check. See application packet for current requirements.
- Provide documentation of a satisfactory drug screening. See application packet for program requirements.
Note: Additional drug screenings may be done for cause at any time by Temple College or any health care facility associated with Temple College.
Promotion
Once a student is accepted into and begins the RADR program curriculum, it is expected that the student will continue to progress directly to the next semester’s courses. In order to do this, the student must:
- Have completed all previously required courses with a “C” grade (2.0 based on a 4.0 scale) or better.
- Be concurrently enrolled in required non-radiologic technology courses scheduled for that semester, or have previously passed these courses with a minimum grade of “C” (2.0).
- Maintain good academic standing (See the College Catalog, Academic Standards, Scholastic Probation, & Scholastic Suspension policies).
- Meet all general Temple College requirements (be approved for registration).
Failure in any radiologic technology course increases the likelihood of failure on the credentialing exam. Therefore, no more than one radiologic technology course may be repeated during the program due to failure, and that course may be repeated only once. In all radiologic technology courses, the following grading scale will be used.
Numerical Value Letter Grade
89.5-100 A
79.5-89.4 B
74.5-79.4 C
69.5-74.4 D
below 69.5 F
Returning Students
If a student is unsuccessful in one course, the student must return within one academic year. A student may withdraw from courses only once during the program and must return within one academic year. Upon returning, the student must successfully complete all remaining coursework in the program. If the student does not return within that time frame, they must reapply to the program as a new student and repeat all radiologic technology coursework.
Returning students must sign a readmission contract to remain in the program.
Transfer from Another Program
Applicants who wish to transfer radiologic technology courses must apply and meet all program admission requirements for the courses to be evaluated for transfer. Transfer students who have more than one radiologic technology course failure within three years of transfer will not be considered for transfer. Students who have been dismissed from a radiologic technology program for unsafe or unprofessional conduct must provide information about the circumstances and are subject to a review to determine their eligibility for enrollment. Transfer students must apply and meet all Radiologic Technology Department admission requirements.
All radiologic technology courses must be completed within one (1) year prior to the program start date in order to be eligible for transfer. Any radiologic technology coursework outside of this time frame will not be accepted for transfer. All policies specified by Temple College for accepting transfer students will apply (see the College Catalog).
Clinical Experiences and Travel Requirements
A significant portion of the students’ learning experience occurs at clinical sites that provide access to large numbers of patients presenting for specific radiologic examinations. Some of these clinical sites may be far from the main campus. Students must be available for clinical rotations during day, evening, and weekend shifts. Temple College and the Department assume no responsibility for expenses incurred due to travel or transportation required to satisfy course requirements.
Accommodations
Students must successfully complete all course and program requirements to graduate. Applicants who believe they have a disability that will require accommodations during the application process or during their enrollment should contact the Radiologic Technology Department as early as possible.
The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) administers a separate process from Temple College’s for determining whether accommodations for disabilities will be granted during credentialing. Eligibility is evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Therefore, a student who receives an accommodation during a course taught at Temple College has no guarantee of receiving an accommodation by ARRT.
