MCHN 1391 - Special Topics in Machinist/Machine Technologist

Topics address recently identified current events, skills, knowledge, and/or attitudes and behaviors pertinent to the technology or occupation and relevant to the professional development of the student. This course was designed to be repeated multiple times to improve student proficiency.
Addition: This course explores selected topics in machining related to metallic materials testing, specimen preparation, and additive/subtractive process integration. Topics emphasize machining of test coupons, dimensional control, surface finishing, and fixture development to support metallurgical and mechanical testing procedures.
Additional Fees: $30 lab fee for consumables

Learning outcomes/objectives are determined by local occupational need and business and industry trends.
1. Prepare and machine metallic test specimens (e.g., tensile, hardness, or microstructure samples) to specified tolerances using lathes, mills, and precision measuring instruments.
2. Demonstrate surface preparation techniques (cutting, grinding, polishing) suitable for metallurgical evaluation and testing per ASTM/ISO standards.
3. Apply quality assurance and dimensional inspection methods using micrometers, calipers, and coordinate systems to verify test sample accuracy.
4. Integrate machining practices with laboratory testing workflows by documenting setup parameters, tooling data, and process outcomes relevant to metallurgical analysis.
