Basic integration of the role of the professional nurse as a provider of patient-centered care, patient safety advocate, member of the health care team, and member of the profession. Study of the common concepts of caring for adult patients and families with medical-surgical health care needs related to body systems, emphasizing knowledge, judgment, skills, and professional values within a legal/ethical framework.
Emphasis is on nursing clinical judgment and concepts of pharmacology with emphasis on the actions, interactions, adverse effects, and nursing implications of drug classifications for clients in medical-surgical settings experiencing health problems involving perioperative, pain, respiratory, fluid and electrolyte, infection/immune, and peripheral vascular disorders.

- Explain the roles of the professional nurse in caring for adult patients and families with medical-surgical health care needs.
- Utilize critical thinking skills, clinical judgment and a systematic problem solving process in providing care for adult patients and families with common health needs.
- Implement pharmacotherapy concepts with emphasis on the actions, interactions, adverse effects, and nursing implications of drug classifications to the care of clients experiencing medical-surgical health care needs involving perioperative, pain, respiratory, fluid and electrolyte, infection/immune, and peripheral vascular disorders.
